3 Valuable Lessons I Learned in Costa Rica

Introduction: 3 Valuable Lessons I Learned in Costa Rica

This blog post was originally penned right after my memorable trip to Costa Rica in April 2022. Due to an issue with my previous blog, I have taken the opportunity to revamp this post. These lessons still resonate with me today.

Traveling has always been my favorite form of therapy… Each destination and adventure provides opportunities for self-discovery and learning about the world around me. After my recent trip to Costa Rica, I experienced both the wonders of the country and some challenging moments. It’s essential to debunk the myth that travel should always be filled with constant happiness.

Sometimes, we encounter difficult times during our journeys, and it’s okay to acknowledge conflicting emotions. These moments, however, allowed me to reflect on my own well-being and the valuable lessons I learned during my time in Costa Rica.

While sharing these lessons exposes my vulnerabilities, I hope they resonate with some of you. If anyone reading this is facing similar challenges, know that you are not alone.

Alongside each lesson, I offer my personal solutions, which may inspire you, but remember to adopt them only if they make sense to you and apply to your situation.

So, here are the three valuable lessons I learned in Costa Rica:

1) Embrace Compassion, Not Pressure

Costa Rica

I tend to place immense pressure on myself while traveling, even more so than in my daily life. This pressure stems from wanting to make the most of my journey—to see and do everything and avoid missing out on any experience. The fear of missing out (FOMO) often pushes me to always strive for perfection, pushing my boundaries and leaving my comfort zone.

While challenging oneself and achieving goals are commendable, it’s essential to be compassionate towards ourselves. Sometimes, that means revising our expectations and being kinder to ourselves.

During my trip, the pressure to excel hindered my progress, and my emotions took over. An example of this was when I attempted scuba diving. The anxiety to perform well overwhelmed me, and I couldn’t focus on the instructor’s instructions, leading to a mental block underwater. I blamed myself, feeling like a failure and shedding tears of disappointment. The pressure I placed on myself also prevented me from fully enjoying certain moments and simply having fun.

Remember, it’s okay to make mistakes and not achieve everything on your to-do list. Trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zone, even in small steps, is an accomplishment. Embrace imperfection as part of the learning process.

When faced with challenges, take a moment to reflect on what could be done differently next time and congratulate yourself for your efforts. Be gentle and compassionate with yourself as you would with a friend.

2) Make Peace with Your Body

Costa Rica

Accepting and loving our bodies can be a challenging journey. I’ve struggled with self-acceptance physically, even after learning to love myself more in terms of personality during a trip to Australia.

In Costa Rica, I found myself self-conscious about my appearance, worried about how others perceived me when I felt bloated or chose not to wear makeup. Guilt and mental torture over always wanting to appear “perfect” stole the joy from my travel experiences.

However, in reality, people are often preoccupied with their own thoughts and rarely pay as much attention to our appearance as we might think. To work on self-acceptance, start each morning with positive affirmations to change your internal dialogue gradually.

When stress arises from body insecurities, shift your perspective by appreciating what your body allows you to do and focus on the present moment. Avoid fixating on mirrors and scales; their opinions should not dictate your value.

With time, practice, and patience, embracing your body will become more natural.

3) Manage Stress and Emotions

Costa Rica

During my time in Costa Rica, I faced moments when my emotions and stress felt overwhelming, causing me to feel ashamed. It’s important to acknowledge our emotions, but it’s equally essential to learn how to manage them effectively.

In travel, situations may not go as planned, glitches may arise, or pitfalls may appear. Learning to navigate these challenges by managing stress and negative emotions is crucial for any traveler.

To enhance my ability to cope, I took up yoga to improve my relaxation techniques. When confronted with stress, I focus on my breathing and take a moment to reflect on the situation before deciding on a course of action. I try to avoid dwelling on the negative and instead concentrate on how to improve my circumstances. Asking for help from others is a valuable skill; remember, we don’t have to face challenges alone.
