Stranded in the USA in 2022: A Travel Adventure and Valuable Lessons
Introduction: Stranded in the USA in 2022
In March 2022, a surge of wanderlust compelled me to embark on a spontaneous adventure to the United States, seeking an escape from the humdrum of my daily routine. Weeks had passed since I truly felt alive, and I longed for a change of scenery.
On a Friday evening, I took matters into my own hands and set off on a mini road trip to Plattsburgh, USA. Though conflicting information regarding travel requirements left me uncertain, I was fully vaccinated and believed I had everything in order as I excitedly packed my bag for the journey ahead.
Little did I know, this journey would soon reveal unexpected twists, leaving me Stranded in the USA in 2022, and leading to valuable takeaways I am eager to share.
My Day in the USA
Waking up at 7 am, I hit the road with enthusiasm, making a quick pit stop at Tim Hortons for coffee (a must for any Canadian traveler). Approaching the border, a mix of excitement and nervousness coursed through me as I reflected on various aspects of my life. After routine questioning at the customs checkpoint, I was allowed to cross into the USA.
The day unfolded with exploration, shopping, capturing photos and videos, and savoring good coffee in the winter sun. It felt surreal to experience a “semblance of normalcy” with no Covid restrictions in Plattsburgh. Although I initially felt uneasy about the lack of masks, I soon adjusted to the surroundings and relished the moments of a carefree day.
Around 3:45 pm, I made the decision to head back to Montreal, eager to avoid driving in the rain and to continue my day’s activities. I completed the required declaration form on the ArriveCan app and proceeded to the customs. At this point, content with a wonderful day of adventure, I anticipated a smooth return to Canada.
Trying to Return to Canada
Upon my attempt to re-enter the USA, the American customs officer gave me an odd look when I explained that I had returned just to get a Covid test. Panic set in, but I managed to pass through and began my search for Covid test sites. To my dismay, many pharmacies were closed, and the few that were open no longer offered tests. Determined to find a solution, I recalled a medical clinic in Burlington that provided same-day test results.
Despite fatigue and hunger, I set my GPS towards the clinic, which was over an hour and a half away. My phone was on low battery, but I refused to be deterred by obstacles. I arrived at the clinic just after 7:00 pm, only to learn that they were fully booked for the night. The kind receptionist advised me to make an appointment for the next morning. Tears welled up in my eyes, but she comforted me, allowing me to stay at the clinic and use their Wi-Fi until closing time.
The Night in Burlington
I spent the evening in Burlington, devising a meticulous plan for the next day, grateful for the clinic’s hospitality. Morning arrived, and I successfully got my Covid test at the Burlington clinic, which offered rapid testing with same-day results. This time, I ensured everything was in order before attempting to cross back into Canada.
My Second Attempt to Return to Canada
Waiting at the Canadian border in Vermont was a test of patience. The anxiety of the moment melted away as I presented my negative Covid test results and passport to the customs officer. A few routine questions later, I was allowed to return to Quebec.
